Block #3 - pattern #2

Lets get our third block done.

Seam that joins piece #5 to pieces #3,#1 and #2

                                                     Threads used:
                                                              Perle #8
                                                             Perle #12
                                                            Nymo beading thread
                                                           4mm silk ribbon
                                                               Seed beads
                                                             Small sequins

                                                            Stitches used:
                                                           Chevron stitch
                                                            Straight stitch
                                                           Colonial knot
                                                            French knot

1. With a Perle #8 stitch a wide chevron stitch along the seam. Keeping the bite of the fabric parallel to the seam will help to create even and tidy chevron stitches.

2. Add three straight stitches (Perle #8) to the lower side of the chevron stitch.

3. Attach small sequins to the chevron stitch.

4. Next we are going to add little shrubs to the chevron.  I  always complete one (in it's entirety) in the center of the seam to see how much space she will take up - and then judge how many more I  need to add.

Begin with a stem stitch in a Perle #8.

5. Scatter a few straight stitches along the stem.

6. Followed by colonial and French knots in a Perle #8 or beads if you prefer.

7. Continue with as many shrubs as your space allows.

In the open spaces of the chevron stitch lazy daisies in a 4mm silk ribbon.

8. On either side of the lazy daisies place a knotted lazy daisy in a Perle #12- a knotted lazy daisy is simply a lazy daisy with a French knot instead of the anchoring stitch.

                      Seam that joins piece #4 to pieces #3, #1, #2 and #6

                                           Threads used:
                                                                        Perle #8
                                                                       Nymo thread
                                                                     Small beads

                                                                Stitches used:
                                                                 Buttonhole Wing stitch
                                                                   Single bead stitch
                                                                       Straight stitch

You might notice that I have extended my fern stitch to break the line from piece #3 onto #4 - I felt I needed movement in this area.

1. With a Perle #8 stitch a few buttonhole wing stitches along the seam - do not make these too close together.

2. Add a small bead and straight stitches to the seam.

                                               ----------------------------------------------------------------

                                            Piece # 4

Once I had completed the above seam I decided that if I of added another stitch combination to this area it would get too busy for my liking. The solution to this is to simply extend the fuchsia that we created on seam 1.

Follow the instructions from seam one to fill in the area of piece #4. Notice that there are no full fuchsias on this stem, only little buds - this is the point of difference for this piece.

                                           -------------------------------

                                                                Piece #7

                                     Stitches used:
                                       Straight stitches
                                                        Colonial knots
                                                       Lazy daisy - extended

                                                      Threads used:
                                                           4mm silk ribbon
                                                              Perle #8
                                                             Perle #12

We are now going to create a flower using the simplest of stitches - one of my favorite things to do - working just with straight stitches, colonial knots and lazy daisies!!!

1. With a Perle #8 thread and straight stitches create a slightly curved stem.

Straight stitch - FOOLPROOF CRAZY QUILTING - page 73

2. To give the stem texture I have whipped it with a 4mm silk ribbon. However, you can whip the straight stitch with stranded cotton (all 6 strands).
Follow the instructions for whipped chain stitch in my book - replace the chain with straight stitches.

Whipped chain stitch - FOOLPROOF CRAZY QUILTING - page 79

3. Stitch a few straight stitches at the top of the stem - make sure that they are NOT even and neat!!!!
I know, this might be hard for some of you..........................

3. The stamens are straight stitches in a Perle #12 with French or colonial knots.
To create the leaves use a 4mm silk ribbon.

4. Now work down the stem adding your straight stitches and knots and before you know it you would have designed your own flower!!!!!!!!!

5. To ground your flower to the bottom of the block add some lazy daisy (extended) in a Perle #12 to the base of your flower. Remember not to splay your bottom!!!!!!!

To create more interest, couch the lazy daisy's extensions at odd angles.

And there we have block three done and dusted!!!!

  1. I've never been told not to "splay my bottom", but it sounds like good advice. 😀 I'm enjoyed this series of posts. I've added several of the flowers to my CQ.

    1. HI Marci, I hope you know that I am not referring to your bottom - but rather to the bottom of the stitch design !!!!!
