Block 1 - Pattern #2 - seam treatment 7

Well here we are - one block done - woohoo!
Once again, a big thank you to all of those who have contacted me regarding these tutorials. I really appreciate the feedback and am pleased that so many of you are joining me.

                                                            Pattern #2
Seam that joins piece # 7 to pieces #3 and #4

                                                        Threads used:
Perle #8 (or 6 strands of stranded cotton)
7mm silk ribbon (or 6 strands of stranded cotton)
                                                               Nymo thread
Small beads (or colonial or french knots)

                                                        Stitches used:
                                          Feather stitch
                                                                Loop stitch
                                                                 Couching
                                                              Straight stitch
                                                             Single bead stitch

For those of you who have been in my workshops know that Feather stitch is my absolute favorite of all the stitches. But, be warned, she has the most enormous capacity to look very unfortunate if not done correctly. Try and form a perfect V for every stitch you make regardless of the angle (hope this makes sense ).

One thing about feather stitch I particularly like is that you can disguise her by adding stitches as you will see in this seam treatment. (All my stitches are in the female form!)

 1. Begin with a curvy feather stitch over the seam - note I did not start my feather stitch right the end of the seam, rather a little way down.

2. Now add a few extra branches to our main stem - keep them curvy!

3. Disguise with some randomly placed straight stitches onto the feather stitch.

4. To "break the lines" of the feather stitch further add some smaller straight stitches to the end of SOME of the straight stitches just done.

5. Let's add some dimension - loop stitches in 7mm silk ribbon and couch them down at the base with Perle #8.

Couching  - is simply a stitch that holds another down.

6. Scatter lazy daisy leaves along the feather stitch in Perle #8

7. We will finish off the seam with small beads.

And there we have it - a completed crazy quilting block in isolation!!

I hope that you have enjoyed it as much as I have.

Please send some photos of your completed blocks or seam treatments to jenniferclouston@gmail.com

See you in a few days for another seam idea.

  1. When you see it as a whole it shows that all the colours you used meld together. Very beautiful :)
