Block 1- Pattern #2 - seam treatment 4

Judging from the feedback and photos, I think I need to be moving along a bit quicker than I am!
Thank you for the the photos of your work, I will post them tomorrow and the next seam treatment on Wednesday.

This is not a seam treatment on my block as I am working in an open area, but it will work very well on a seam, if you prefer.

Piece #6 on Pattern #2

                                                            Threads used:
                                                          7mm silk ribbon
                                                          4mm silk ribbon
                                                           Stranded cotton
Perle #12 or a single strand of stranded cotton

                                                             Stitches used:
                                                                 Ribbon stitch
                                                                  Tufting
                                                              Fishbone stitch
                                                               Straight stitch
                                                            Twisted straight stitch

Tip: I talk about "pressure points" a lot in my workshops - by this I mean the focal point of a seam or free area - in this situation the large flower is the pressure point. It's best if these focal points are NOT in the center of the seam treatment or free space - use the rule of thirds principle to find the suitable place to position your flower.

1. Normally, when I create a flower, the center is the first thing I do and then the petals are formed around the center. However, because the center of this flower is tufting, its better to do the petals first as the threads of the tufting will get caught in the petal stitches.
Please keep in mind that the squares I am working on are small, only 6", so enlarge yours stitches accordingly. BUT a ribbon stitch does not like to be long and thin, so keep your petals soft and "lofty".

Mark a small circle on your work and surround it with ribbon stitches in 7mm silk ribbon using a chenille #22 needle.

2. Oh, how I love tufting it creates dimension and movement. Remember to separate all 6 strands of the stranded cotton and then thread the needle - the looser threads make the tufting nice and fluffy.
Fill the center of the flower with a few tufts (all 6 strands) and then trim down to suit.

3.  Working with 4mm silk ribbon create a few leaves using the fishbone stitch.
A tip to working a fishbone leaf is making the first stitch much longer than you thing necessary.

4. When creating these floral sprays try to work outwards from your pressure points - always having the stitches connected to the main flower.
Add some twisted stab stitches in 4mm silk ribbon and ribbon stitches or straight stitches to the end to create buds and small flowers.

5. Continue moving outwards from the pressure point adding ribbon stitch leaves in 4mm silk ribbon and a few longer twisted stab stitches.

6. Nearly done - using the same colour thread as the center of the pressure point add some tufting buds to the end of the twisted straight stitches. Use all 6 strands of the stranded cotton.

7. Okay, so you all know what's coming next - Yup, that right, some stab stitches - work outwards from the pressure point with a single strand of stranded cotton.
I have also couched down the little tufted buds with 4mm silk ribbon - just to make them behave!

Couching is simply a small loop that holds something in place.

Happy stitching!

  1. Very pretty. I have done silk ribbon embroidery but I have a limited colour selection in my stash. I'm not sure that any really match the block I've made. I'll have to see what I can come up with :)
